Sri Lanka's poorest households and its oldest neighbours get a $100 million hand up — together

The Asian Development Bank has approved $100 million to strengthen Sri Lanka's social protection: $50 million in policy support and $50 million in project lending. Through the national Aswesuma registry, 30,000 households across six districts will get livelihood grants, business and employment support, skills training and financial literacy — with women and young people at the centre. The same programme funds five model day-care centres for older people in poorer districts, and stronger eldercare rules. 'Sri Lanka's economic recovery must translate into meaningful improvements in the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable people,' says ADB country director Shannon Cowlin.

The upbeat factorone programme that refuses to choose between the young, the poor and the old.
