Strangers become 'buddies' so young people leaving care always have someone to call

North East Lincolnshire Council's Buddy scheme matches everyday residents with children and young people in the care community or leaving the care system, for monthly days out built around shared interests. There are currently 23 volunteers, and the borough is recruiting more — adults of all ages commit to at least 18 months and become a consistent friendly face. Former volunteer Leasha called it 'incredibly important' to be a steady presence: 'My buddy is incredibly strong and resilient, I learn something new from her at every meet.' Current volunteer Joy and her buddy bond over dogs, donkeys, crafting, pizza and ice-cream, and have visited Waltham Windmill's miniature steam train.

The upbeat factorconsistency is a gift — 23 ordinary people choosing, month after month, to be someone a kid can count on.
