Sunlight outruns the atom: solar generated more electricity than nuclear in 2025 — a first
It happened quietly, month by month. The World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2026 records that in April 2025, global solar generation passed nuclear generation for the first time — and from March 2025 through June 2026, either solar or wind alone out-generated nuclear every single month, with both doing so together in March, April and May 2026. The scale explains it: the world added 510 gigawatts of solar capacity in a year, taking the total to 2,383 gigawatts (up 27%), while wind added a record 159 gigawatts. Nuclear capacity, by contrast, has stayed essentially flat for more than 25 years. No single country or company did this — millions of rooftops, farms and solar fields did, one installation at a time. The report, overseen by energy analyst Mycle Schneider, was covered by pv magazine.
