Sunshine by day, wind after dark — Spain just signed a power deal that keeps clean electricity flowing around the clock
Solar panels rest when the sun goes down, but the wind often picks up — so Germany's Encavis has paired the two in its first-ever hybrid power deal. It will supply Spanish energy provider Visalia with 60 GWh of renewable electricity a year for three and a half years — about 210 GWh in total — drawn from two solar parks and three wind farms near Zaragoza with a combined capacity of 199 MW. Visalia will pass that power on to homes and businesses across Spain. Deals that blend sun and wind are still rare in Europe — only three hybrid agreements were signed in the whole of September — because most pair renewables with batteries instead. This one shows the sky itself can do the balancing.
