Sunshine now powers a fifth of the factory that builds Europe's train frames

For forty years, the Mátranovák plant in Hungary has made the bogie frames — the steel undercarriages — for metros and high-speed trains across Europe. On October 20, Alstom switched on a 1-megawatt solar park beside the factory: about 7,000 square metres of panels expected to generate around 1,700 megawatt-hours a year, covering more than 20% of the site's electricity and avoiding about 260 tonnes of CO2 annually. Built with energy company E.ON under a long-term agreement after nearly two years of planning and construction, it follows years of quieter upgrades at the plant — efficient lighting, insulation, better heating. 'A tangible example of how sustainability and operational efficiency can go hand in hand,' said Alstom Hungary chief Gáspár Balázs.

The upbeat factorthe plant that builds Europe's trains now runs, in part, on the weather above its own roof.
