Sydney's virtual-hospital nurses are proving medication histories work without a waiting room

Before any treatment is safe, someone has to know exactly which medicines a patient already takes — a careful detective task called a Best Possible Medication History. At a metropolitan virtual hospital in Sydney, nurses and midwives now do that work by screen and phone. A peer-reviewed study in BMC Health Services Research interviewed 15 of these highly experienced clinicians and found the practice works well when it is backed by clear roles, practical training, timely feedback and supportive teams. It is a quiet finding with wide reach: careful, nurse-led care does not always need a ward.
