Tanzania's black rhinos have nearly doubled in a decade — 142 to 302
In 2014, Tanzania's black rhinos were down to about 142 animals. The latest national census, completed through June 2025, counted 302 — with a separate WWF Tanzania-cited count at 285. A near-doubling in eleven years for one of the most poached animals on Earth. The recipe, per the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute: technology-enabled surveillance, community ranger programmes, intelligence-led enforcement, habitat stitched back together for connected range, and translocation between protected areas to keep the gene pool healthy. Proof that structured, long-term conservation investment pays off at scale.
The upbeat factorawe at what patience plus rangers plus science can do — one of the world's most poached animals, doubling.
