The aunties, grandads, and neighbors raising Liverpool's children

Liverpool just marked ten years of Kinship Care Week — a celebration of the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family friends who raise children when their parents can't. The local Kinship Carers group supports hundreds of families with training, trips, and a lifeline of a support network; the city now stands in a global network with celebrations in more than 20 countries. "My granddaughter loves all the trips and activities," said carer Tina. Another, Cathy, called the group's phone number "the best number I ever received."

The upbeat factorThe upbeat factor: family, redefined by showing up — warmth in every spare bedroom turned sanctuary.
