The doctor who travels by screen: 50,000 children in line for specialist care

In Kenya, a screen is becoming a lifeline: the Daktari Smart telemedicine program is carrying specialist pediatric care to 50,000 children across 10 counties, starting this month. It has already logged more than 8,000 remote consultations this year — and children flagged through it have received free treatment at Gertrude's Children's Hospital for cleft lips, heart conditions, and lupus. The program also trained 205 nurses, including two in Lamu County sponsored for specialist pediatric training. "An effective referral system is critical to ensuring children receive the right care at the right time," said CEO Dr. Robert Nyarango.
