The fossil that posed as a reptile was hiding gills all along

A 345-million-year-old Scottish fossil nicknamed Lizzie spent decades as an icon of life's move onto land, thanks to her claw-tipped feet. But X-ray scans at a synchrotron in France have now revealed a primitive skull, internal gills, and a fish-like mouth full of tiny teeth. Lizzie turns out to have been aquatic — and her 'land-adapted' feet show that some reptile-like traits evolved while their owners were still living in the water.

The upbeat factorwonder — a humble Scottish fossil just rewrote a chapter of how life left the sea.
