The headset that walked housebound patients back into the world

Leo had all but stopped leaving the house. Like many people living with psychosis, everyday situations outside the front door had become unbearable — until he put on a VR headset. In the largest clinical trial of virtual reality for mental health ever run, led by Oxford researchers across nine NHS trusts, an automated program called gameChange guided patients through feared situations with a virtual coach — no therapist required. The people who benefited most were the ones who had found it hardest: patients who were largely housebound got back outside, and the gains held six months later. "When I took off the headset, I felt more confident," Leo said. "It truly showed me the possibilities."
