The lights are flowing again: Nepal restarts clean-power exports to Bangladesh after the floods

When August floods smashed two hydropower plants, Nepal's young electricity trade with Bangladesh stopped cold. On Friday evening it restarted: 40 megawatts of Himalayan hydropower are flowing to Bangladesh again through India's grid, now generated by the Solu Khola and Kabeli B1 plants under a five-year seasonal agreement. Nepal Electricity Authority chief Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha called the resumption an important development for regional power trade. Despite the flood damage, Nepal also sold India 634 million units of electricity worth Rs 5.925 billion (about $45 million) between mid-September and mid-October — more than in the same period last year.

The upbeat factorA flood broke the plants; the region rewired around the damage in two months.
