The little Christchurch house where women won the vote just joined New Zealand's World Heritage list

From 1888 to 1902, a modest house in Christchurch called Te Whare Waiutuutu was the nerve center of a revolution that changed the world. There, Kate Sheppard prepared the petitions — including the 1893 'monster petition' with more than 31,000 signatures — that made New Zealand, in 1893, the first country in history where women could vote. On October 7, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga announced the house has been added to the country's World Heritage Tentative List. The house still hosts visitors, standing as a reminder that the world's biggest democratic firsts started at someone's kitchen table.
