The lost monastery a village of 190 dug up with its own hands
On the Isle of Lismore — nine square miles, no pub, no coffee shop, 190 residents — a team of mostly older locals picked up trowels and unearthed the long-lost monastery of Lios Mòr, founded in the sixth century by the missionary Saint Mo Luóc. The community dig, published in the journal Antiquity, turned neighbors into archaeologists and rewrote a chapter of Scotland's early history.
