The octopus’s brilliant brain may come from how its DNA folds — not just its genes

University of Vienna researchers have found that an ancient, massive reorganization of the cephalopod genome changed how DNA folds in 3D — rewiring gene regulation in ways that may explain how octopuses, squid and cuttlefish evolved such complex brains. Published in Nature Communications to coincide with World Octopus Day (October 8). Eight arms, three hearts, and now a genome folded like origami.
