The rhinos are thriving and the gates are open: Pobitora welcomes its visitors back
Assam's Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary reopened on October 13 for the 2026–27 season, completing a trio of homecomings after Manas on October 2 and Kaziranga on October 3. Visitors get new safari vehicles this year, with elephant safaris to follow in November. Pobitora packs in about 16 one-horned rhinos per square kilometre — among the densest gatherings of rhinos anywhere — and the state's forest minister credited rangers and local communities together for a turnaround that has also seen rhino numbers climb back in Manas, where they had once almost vanished.
The upbeat factorwhen a sanctuary reopens, it is the rhinos — and the neighbours who guard them — who get the headline.
