The UN just held up Nigeria's rural electricity programme as a model: 125 mini-grids, 5 million people powered, 5,000 green jobs
The United Nations' World Social Report 2026 singles out Nigeria's Electrification Project as a success story other countries can learn from. Citing World Bank data, the report says the programme's mix of targeted subsidies and private investment built 125 mini-grids and put more than a million solar home systems into homes — bringing electricity to more than 5 million people and supporting over 5,000 green jobs. The UN also praised Nigeria and Ghana for pioneering solar panels that share land with farming, so the same field produces food and power.
The upbeat factora worked example, proven at national scale, that clean power reaches the last village first when subsidies aim carefully.
