The women of Numan are planting their way back to fertile land

In Numan, in Nigeria's Adamawa State, the planting was done by the women who farm the land. Rural women farmers, working through Women's Climate Action Committees, put 400 seedlings in the ground across local wards — mango, mahogany and other valuable species chosen to hold the soil against erosion, give shade, and, for the fruit trees, feed families and earn income in years to come. The work is supported by the Women's Peace and Humanitarian Fund through its HER Response Counts Project, with traditional leaders and youth groups alongside. UN Women told the story on 15 October, the International Day of Rural Women, under a theme that fits the scene exactly: 'Rural Women Farmers Caring for Mother Nature.' Four hundred seedlings is a beginning, not a forest — but it is a beginning planted by the people who will water it.

The upbeat factorthe farmers most exposed to a changing climate are the ones replanting against it — tree by tree, ward by ward.
