The world now has a scoreboard for keeping mothers and babies safe from heat
Extreme heat can endanger a pregnancy before a baby is even born — and an estimated 1.5 billion children now face fiercer, longer heatwaves. This week the World Health Organization, the World Meteorological Organization, UNICEF and UNFPA launched the first shared set of indicators to track heat's effects on pregnant women, newborns and children — from preterm births to school attendance — so countries can spot the danger early and act on it.
