They sing Gord Downie's songs in 12 cities — and the cancer charities are C$732,000 (about $520,000) richer
GEDfest began in Calgary in 2018 with one fan's idea: gather Tragically Hip tribute acts and fans on the anniversary of singer Gord Downie's death, and raise money for local cancer organisations. This year it runs 13 shows in 12 cities across Canada and, for the first time, the USA, on 16, 17, 21 and 24 October — every chapter run entirely by volunteers. The movement has already donated C$732,000 (about $520,000) to community cancer charities, and this year's goal of C$425,000 (about $300,000) would carry the total past C$1 million (about $710,000).
The upbeat factora beloved singer's songs, turned by fans into a volunteer machine for funding cancer care, city by city.
