Thirty feet down a mineshaft, one dog, and a rescue team that refused to leave him

West of Grantsville, Utah, an adventurous dog tumbled headfirst down an abandoned mineshaft — thirty feet into the dark. The Tooele County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team spent hours rigging anchors around a narrow opening that offered almost none, then lowered a rescuer who fashioned a makeshift harness around the frightened animal and lifted him back into daylight. He was unhurt, and back with his family the same day. 'A paws-itively successful rescue,' the team posted — underselling, as rescuers do, several hours of not giving up.
