Three kidney treatments just held the line for two years — a turning point for a disease that quietly steals kidney function
IgA nephropathy is a slow, quiet disease: the immune system damages the kidneys' filters, and many patients drift toward kidney failure. At the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week, three Phase III trials reported two-year results in the same week. Sibeprenlimab cut the risk of serious kidney-function loss or kidney failure by 97% compared with placebo, with kidney function holding stable; atacicept steadied kidney function in the ORIGIN 3 trial; and telitacicept slowed decline in high-risk patients. All three work by calming the immune signal at the source of the damage, rather than mopping up after it. 'Targeting the source of kidney damage' is how the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Dr Dana Rizk describes the shift.
