Three kilometres out to sea, a fishing crew found a kangaroo — and cradled it all the way home

Skipper Ryan Smith thought he was seeing things. On Boston Bay off Port Lincoln, South Australia, he shouted what ABC Eyre Peninsula reports became the catch of a lifetime: 'I reckon there's a roo in the water.' It was — a male kangaroo, exhausted and waterlogged, swimming about 3 kilometres (about 2 miles) from shore. The crew lowered their boat's sea door to the water, lifted him aboard under his arms, and crew member Jake Murray hugged the tired animal to keep him calm: 'It was almost like he was having a little nap.' Crew mate Miguel Villarroel, a diver from the Galapagos Islands, had never seen a kangaroo before. Back on the beach, the roo rested — then hopped away.

The upbeat factora fishing trip became a rescue, and a very tired swimmer got a lift home.
