Three malaria vaccines, one first test in people: Melbourne gives the green light

Malaria's parasite is a shape-shifter, attacking in three distinct stages — which is why Patronus Biotech designed vaccines that fight on all three fronts at once. On October 19, an Australian ethics committee gave the company approval to begin its first human trial: three vaccine candidates, covering the two main malaria parasites (and one that targets both), to be tested for safety at Nucleus Network in Melbourne, with analysis support from the University of Oxford's Draper Lab. First volunteers are expected to enrol in December 2026. It is the very first step a vaccine can take in people — and for a disease that still defines childhood across much of the world, every serious new candidate matters.

The upbeat factora vaccine designed for malaria's every disguise just earned its first chance to prove itself in people.
