Three new centipedes step out of the Western Ghats — India's count reaches 23
Some discoveries wait in drawers. Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India's Western Ghats Regional Centre in Kozhikode and Malabar Christian College worked through unidentified specimens in the National Zoological Collection and described three centipede species new to science, all in the genus Rhysida, from southern India. One, Rhysida quadrispinosa, is named for the four spines on its last leg; R. coorgensis honours Coorg in Karnataka; R. neyyarensis is named for Kerala's Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary. India's known Rhysida count rises to 23. The Western Ghats — a global biodiversity hotspot older than the Himalayas — keeps reminding us how much life still goes unlisted.
