Three women scientists, three countries, one stage in Lima

At the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science ceremony in Lima, three researchers were honoured from 92 applications across Peru, Colombia and Ecuador, each receiving $10,000 to advance her work. Peru's Dr Sheena Sangay studies the fungi that live on forest roots — the hidden partners that feed trees — across Amazonian reserves. Colombia's Dr Ainhoa Rubio Clemente works on turning agro-industrial waste into value, and Ecuador's Dr Andrea Katherine Orellana Manzano hunts epigenetic markers — chemical switches on DNA — linked to a blood cancer called B-cell lymphoma.

The upbeat factorthe science that sustains forests, cleans waste and fights cancer — led by women, funded to go further.
