Toledo's museum is bringing free art classes right into the neighborhood

The Toledo Museum of Art is taking art out of the gallery and into the neighborhoods around it. A $300,000 grant from the KeyBank Foundation will pay for three years of free, hands-on art sessions at places people already gather — Cherry Street Mission, Art Tatum Zone sites, and two branches of the public library. The same teaching artists come back to the same sites week after week, so children, families, and neighbors get to know them while they make art together. The museum aims to run more than 150 sessions a year and welcome over 1,700 participants annually — reaching people where they already are, instead of waiting for them to find the museum.

The upbeat factorthe museum stopped waiting for visitors — it moved in next door.
