Trinidad and Tobago Scientists Found 20 Possible New Species in Their Deep Sea

Trinidad and Tobago's first locally led deep-sea expedition — aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute's research vessel Falkor (too) — found 25 cold-seep ecosystems and about 20 suspected new species, including a purple octopus, ghost sharks and carnivorous sponges. The month-long voyage mapped roughly 13% of the nation's marine territory and added 700 specimens to the University of the West Indies museum, multiplying its deep-sea collection twelvefold.
