Tunisia defeats trachoma, the world's leading infectious cause of blindness
The WHO validated Tunisia for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem — the end of a decades-long battle against a disease that once affected more than half the population in parts of the south. Surgery, antibiotics and better water and sanitation together pushed the infection into history.
