Twelve cyclists, 400 miles, £33,536 (about $45,600): Winchester rides Venice to Rome for its hospice

The road from Venice to Rome is 400 miles. Twelve cyclists from Winchester Rugby Club, led by club president Rob Sanderson, rode it in five days — not for the scenery, though Italy provided plenty, but for Winchester Hospice, which cares for local people at the end of their lives. The team, with three support crew, has now counted the result: £33,536.17 (about $45,600) raised across the ride and the club's two companion events. It is the hospice's latest overseas challenge, and the club's motivation was plain — the hospice looks after Winchester's families, so Winchester's rugby club looks after the hospice.

The upbeat factor400 miles of Italian hills, ridden by amateurs for the neighbours they'll never meet — a town pedalling for its own hospice.
