Twenty countries met in the Dominican Republic to get sanitation right — Belize hosts next
Clean water in the tap is only half the story; what happens afterwards decides whether a community stays healthy. The Dominican Republic has just hosted LatinoSan 2026, the 7th Latin American Sanitation Conference, bringing together experts, international organisations and government representatives from more than twenty countries to share what works in water and sanitation. Wellington Arnaud, head of the national water institute Inapa, showcased the Dominican Republic's progress, including a sanitation programme covering more than 200 kilometres of coastline in tourist areas — among the most ambitious of its kind in the region. Public Health Minister Víctor Atallah underlined sanitation's role as a cornerstone of public health and community wellbeing. The conference, supported by the Inter-American Development Bank, closed by naming Belize as host of the next edition — the region's sanitation baton, passed on.
