Two crabs that live on single mountains: Vietnam gains two whole new genera

On the forested summit of Co To Mountain in southern Vietnam lives a freshwater crab found nowhere else on Earth — and until now, science had no name for it. Researchers Do, Nguyen, Dang, Bui and Le have described it as Angiangmon nuicoto, a brand-new genus as well as species, alongside a second new genus, Lamdongmon, from a neighbouring peak, in the journal Zoosystematics and Evolution. Each crab appears to live on just one mountain, in less than 50 and 250 square kilometres (about 19 and 97 square miles) respectively. Giving a species a name is the first step to protecting it: you cannot save what has never been counted.

The upbeat factortwo mountaintops, two crabs, two names — and now a reason to keep those forests standing.
