Two million children, back to learning: northern Nigeria's classrooms fill again

In Kaduna this week, teachers, officials and partners closed out a programme with numbers that used to sound impossible: the UK-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) has directly reached more than two million children since 2019 and trained over 25,000 teachers and facilitators across northern Nigeria. In Kaduna State alone, basic-school enrolment rose from 2.17 million children in 2022 to more than 2.57 million in 2025, and over 25,000 children who were out of school have returned to learning across the state's 23 local government areas. PLANE, delivered with DAI, UNICEF and Save the Children, now hands its work to Nigerian institutions. As British High Commissioner Pete Vowles put it: 'PLANE is closing. The UK's education partnership with Nigeria is not.'

The upbeat factortwo million children in class — and the system that got them there now belongs to the communities it serves.
