Two weeks of care, one open sky: Igan the kite flies home to Tarlac

After a typhoon left a Brahminy kite — a handsome chestnut-and-white bird of prey locals call a lawin — weak and unable to fly in Concepcion, Tarlac, the neighbours who found it did exactly the right thing: they carried it to the environment officers of the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources. For nearly two weeks, the Capas team fed and watched over the bird they named Igan, until its strength came back. Then they opened their hands. Igan is back in its natural habitat, and officer Isagani Manalili hopes the story travels further than the bird: 'When residents report and turn over wildlife, they become partners in protecting biodiversity.'

The upbeat factora storm-battered bird, a village that knew what to do, and two weeks of patience ending in an open sky.
