Valentina walks the mangroves: UNESCO turns Latin America's coastal forests into a comic for their defenders

Mangroves are forests that breathe with the tides — nurseries for fish, shields for coasts, and livelihoods for the communities who know them best. UNESCO has launched Las Visiones del Manglar (The Visions of the Mangrove), a Spanish-language comic that follows a young traveller, Valentina, through the mangroves of Latin America and the Caribbean in three chapters: the seeds and biodiversity, the people and their traditional knowledge, and the roots — restoration and climate resilience. The comic, launched during the COP17 biodiversity conference in Yerevan, grows out of UNESCO's MangRes initiative, which works with local communities, scientists and governments across seven biosphere reserves to restore mangroves. It is science you can hand to a child, drawn from the knowledge of the people who live in the forests it celebrates.
