Walking, eating, celebrating Mass: Pope Leo is recovering just as his doctors hoped
A day after surgeons in Rome removed the lower lobe of Pope Leo's right lung, where a small cancerous growth had been found, his doctors say everything is going the way they hoped. His blood tests and chest X-ray on Wednesday came back in the expected range, he has started breathing exercises, he is walking around his hospital room, and he ate breakfast and lunch as usual. On Wednesday afternoon he even joined in celebrating Mass at Gemelli Hospital. The 71-year-old still plans to travel to South America in November, and no changes have been made to that trip.
The upbeat factorone day after major surgery, he is already back on his feet — and back at the altar.
