Win number 149: Iga Swiatek passes Serena Williams on the WTA 1000 wins list in Wuhan

It started badly — two games down before she had settled. Then Iga Swiatek did what she has done for five straight seasons: she steadied, and she swept. The Polish star beat compatriot Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-1 in Wuhan in one hour and 43 minutes for her 149th career win at WTA 1000 events, passing Serena Williams' 148 for seventh place on the all-time list since the format began in 2009. It was also her 40th win of a self-described toughest season — the fifth consecutive year she has reached that mark. Consistency, it turns out, is its own kind of brilliance.

The upbeat factorin her hardest year, Swiatek's quiet superpower — showing up, every week, at the highest level — carried her past a legend.
