Work begins to give an Ontario nuclear reactor 30 more years of clean power — and cancer-fighting isotopes
At Bruce Power in Ontario, Canada, workers have begun the deep overhaul of Unit 5: replacing 480 fuel-channel tubes, 960 feeder tubes and the huge steam generators so the reactor can keep running for another 30 to 35 years. It is the second half of a privately funded programme renewing six reactors, and the track record is encouraging — Unit 6 finished ahead of schedule in 2023, and Unit 3 came back online in June more than seven months early. Alongside clean electricity for homes, businesses and hospitals, the plant produces medical isotopes used in cancer treatment around the world. The programme sustains about 22,000 jobs a year, and 95% of its spending stays in Canada.
