Young innovators in Maiduguri take on child nutrition with food from home

In Maiduguri, the people designing better meals for mothers and babies are young Nigerians themselves. UNICEF and the Borno State government have launched a Youth-led Nutrition Innovation Challenge that brings young people together to build low-cost meal plans from locally available foods, aimed at protecting children from acute malnutrition in their first 1,000 days of life and helping pregnant women and young children in host communities and displacement camps eat well on a small budget. UNICEF's Borno field chief Tarek Akkad, represented at the launch by nutrition specialist Aminu Usman, said the challenge pairs the young designers with the Borno State Primary Healthcare Development Board, the U-Report community platform and the Foundation for Alternative Learning in Underserved Communities.

The upbeat factorthe meal plans come from the community's own kitchens, designed by its own young people.
