Your pension, their quantum computer: UK retirement savings start backing homegrown deeptech
The money in a workplace pension usually sits far from the laboratory. Scottish Widows, Aberdeen Investments and IP Group have announced a first set of investments designed to close that gap: pension members' capital flowing, through a new long-term asset fund, into high-growth British science and technology companies. The initial picks span the frontier — Oxford Quantum Circuits and Quantum Motion, both building quantum computers; Nyobolt, with ultra-fast-charging batteries; and Genomics Limited, applying AI and large genetic datasets to preventive healthcare and drug discovery. The idea is patient capital for patient work: stronger retirement outcomes for savers, and scale-up funding for companies trying to turn world-class research into world-class businesses.
