Zambia has hit its 1,000-megawatt solar target — sunshine now stands beside its rivers
Zambia has reached the goal it set itself: 1,000 megawatts of solar generation in 2026. Speaking at the Mines and Investment Insaka in Lusaka on October 21, President Hakainde Hichilema said solar is increasingly complementing the hydropower the country has long relied on, and called on neighbouring countries to share energy-reform lessons and collaborate across the region. The next target is bigger: 10,000 megawatts of total generation capacity by 2031 under the Grow Zambia Agenda. For a country whose lights have depended on river levels, a second, sun-powered backbone changes what drought can do to the grid.
The upbeat factora national target, actually reached — and a power supply no longer hostage to the rain.
