Zambia's Mailo solar plant just grew again — 59.5 MWp, built in under a year, selling power across borders

On a site in Zambia, the panels keep coming. Solarcentury Africa has switched on Mailo 2, a 34.5 MWp solar plant built in under twelve months, taking the Mailo project's working capacity to 59.5 MWp on the way to a planned 118 MWp. The first phase, running since July 2025, sells its power on the open regional market through the Southern African Power Pool — proof that a solar plant in Zambia can thrive by trading electricity across borders rather than relying on a single buyer. Mailo sits inside a 350 MW portfolio the company is building across the country. 'We are proud to have delivered the second phase of the Mailo development and to continue supporting Zambia's growing demand for reliable and sustainable electricity,' said chief executive Jason de Carteret.
