1,100 volunteers, 51 project sites, 200 roses: one Georgia county's day of doing

Thomas County, Georgia, runs on a simple annual experiment: what happens if everyone helps on the same day? On October 24, the 23rd annual Hands On Thomas County Day sent more than 1,100 volunteers of all ages to 51 project sites. In honour of Thomasville's bicentennial, they planted the final 160 of 200 roses across the community, gave away 200 free trees, packed 200 hygiene kits, fed 200 families at the Manna Drop and stuffed more than 300 backpacks with food for children. Student groups alone supplied over 500 of the volunteers — and a local company handed out 900 pulled-pork sandwiches to keep them going.

The upbeat factora whole county keeping an appointment with itself — 1,100 neighbours, one day, dozens of small things finished.
