$1 million raised so 1,152 Quad Cities children can see the board clearly

Five years ago in Davenport, Iowa, Sunder Subbaroyan and Annette Sherbeyn had a simple conviction: no child should struggle in class just because they cannot see the board. Inspired by Vision to Learn, which brings free eye exams and glasses to students, they turned it into an annual evening of food and giving called Eat, Drink and Be Giving. On Saturday, October 24, the fifth edition at Crow Valley Golf Club crossed a milestone — $1 million in cumulative giving. The local results are written on children's faces: since Vision to Learn launched in the Quad Cities in August 2023, it has reached fifteen schools, screened 5,581 students, provided 1,253 eye exams and delivered glasses to 1,152 children. 'Every child deserves the chance to see clearly, learn confidently, and discover what they can achieve,' Subbaroyan said.

The upbeat factora dinner party became a production line for clear sight — 1,152 pairs of glasses, one neighbourhood at a time.
