10,000 Rwandan farmers are getting seasonal forecasts and climate-smart help before the drought decides for them
The Adaptation Fund has approved $4.97 million for a four-year programme supporting at least 10,000 smallholder farmers in Kayonza, Gatsibo and Nyagatare — drought-prone districts in Rwanda's east. Run by Rwanda's agriculture ministry with UNDP support, the programme expands seasonal weather forecasts farmers can actually plan around, and spreads climate-smart farming practices suited to hotter, drier seasons. The Rwanda grant is part of nearly $35 million in approvals, which also include $30 million for 500,000 people in the Mandera Triangle where Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia meet. For a farmer deciding when to plant, a trustworthy forecast is not information — it is the harvest.
