200 flights, 12,000 second chances: the little airline that flies shelter dogs and cats to the homes waiting for them

On October 14, a plane carrying 112 dogs and cats lifted off from Louisiana bound for shelters in the Northeast of the USA — the 200th rescue mission flown by Race for Life Rescue, a nonprofit that moves at-risk animals out of overcrowded shelters and disaster zones to places with room and adopters waiting. Since its first flight in 2022, when it carried relief supplies into Florida after Hurricane Ian and flew home with nearly 40 displaced cats, the organisation has flown more than 12,000 animals, working with shelters in more than 30 states. Shelters pay nothing; donors, foundations and partners including the BISSELL Pet Foundation and the ASPCA cover the flights. So far in 2026 alone: 49 missions and 3,267 animals. Through December 31, founder Jim DeFrancesco is matching every donation.

The upbeat factorfor 12,000 animals, the flight out of the crowded shelter was the flight into a life.
