206 Eritrean students honoured — and 58% of them are girls

In classrooms across Eritrea's Central Region, eight schools gathered this week to honour 206 of their brightest eighth-graders — and 119 of the students stepping up for certificates, 58% of them, were girls. One student, Eliana Simon, received a special award for a perfect score of 100% in the national examination for 2025/2026. School directors, parents' committees and teachers shared the stage, with exemplary teachers and parents recognised alongside the students. The message from the podiums was simple and repeated everywhere: keep working, and parents, keep watching over the studying at home. For the families in the room, it was a morning built entirely around children who did the work — and were seen doing it.

The upbeat factora perfect score, 205 classmates beside her, and a honours list where girls are the majority.
