252 million hectares are healing — the world's biggest nature comeback is underway in 149 countries
Across 149 countries, people are bringing damaged land and water back to life. Restoration is now underway on 252 million hectares (973,000 square miles) of degraded ecosystems, the United Nations' environment agency said on Thursday — the healing work is already happening at a planetary scale. There is a long way to go: the world's shared goal is 1 billion hectares by 2030. But a quarter of that goal is already in motion, in country after country, because communities and governments chose to repair what was worn out instead of writing it off.
The upbeat factorin 149 countries at once, people are not just protecting what is left of nature — they are bringing back what was lost.
