3,400 young Nigerians, half of them women: a skills project opens in Kano for the jobs that are actually hiring

In Kano on Monday, 3,400 young people became the first cohort of a project built around a practical question: what skills get a young person hired? The Youth Employability and Skills Project, run by Yaba College of Technology with the Industrial Training Fund and supported by UNICEF and the European Union, will train adolescents and young people across 30 local government areas in Kano, Jigawa and Sokoto states in vocational, digital, green and entrepreneurial skills. Exactly half the places — 1,700 — go to young women. The project, part of the EU-supported Education and Youth Empowerment Programme in Northern Nigeria, opened with a week of induction for the trainers who will deliver it, running to 6 November.

The upbeat factornot training for training's sake — 3,400 places, aimed squarely at employability, half of them women's.
