300 megawatts of desert sunshine: Algeria switches on its largest solar plant yet
A new solar station at El Oued, in eastern Algeria, has been switched on — at 300 megawatts, it is the largest working solar plant in the country. The plant, owned by state utility Sonelgaz, is the third big solar site Algeria has opened this year, after 200-megawatt plants at Tendla and El-Ghrous. It is part of a first national push to build about 3.2 gigawatts of renewable power across 21 plants in 14 provinces, with a longer-term goal of 15 gigawatts of solar by 2035.
The upbeat factora country famous for oil and gas just made sunshine its newest power source — with twenty more plants already in the pipeline.
